ALL IT questions (from turning ur pc on to OCing ur pc)

Post by TheKicKer on Tue Apr 29, 2008 2:19 am

lots of u dudes are pc/mac ignorants - which is very understandable - i believe this Topic should be left all the time and any1 that has any question or query (even sharing his rig + OC) is welcome
i will start this topic by saying i am not able to OC my PC more than 14.65% and i believe it is due to system overheating - that is why i just bought a Thermalrite CPU cooler with 12 layers and 2 fans. i will try to OC it more once this piece comes;
ORIGINAL RIG:
mobo Asus P5W DH Deluxe
CPU - E6700 Conroe (Dual 2 core @2.66Ghz)
4* 1GB Twin2X PC8500 Corsair (Latency 5-5-5-15 @ 2.2 V)
5* 500 GB HDD SATA II
XFX 8800 Ultra VGA
Thermaltake PSU True 850 Watts
20X DVD RAM LG
3D Aurora Case
28 inch Viewsonic VX2835VM @ 1920*
1200 res.

i OCd my system and was able to reach CPU speed of 3.06 Ghz @ 1.5 V with RAM downgrade to PC 7100 @ 2.2V (5-5-5-15) and my GPU memory to 1110 mhz (original 1080) and core from 675 mhz to 685 mhz- this is where i got my system stable ; anything more and PC crashes after 20 mn or if i do FutureMark 3D stress testi can run any game at FULL graphics and it runs soooo smooth
i already have heatsinks for my RAM (and yes i use all 4GB for i am using Vista 64-bit that can see 4GB ram - all u need to do is go to ur BIOS and ENABLE memory Feature Remap
Now anyone using Asus mobo DO NOT USE ASUS BIOS flash thru windows it will corrupt ur BIOS -always use EZflash2 or AFUDOS
i will keep u posted on when i receive the CPU cooler -
BTW water cooling LOOKS cool but it is NOT that effective so don't waste ur money on it

Puajy; u r hilarious;seriously wot is ur rig man! no way a pro IT like u has a Renault 5 model 1982 under his hood; in this case inside ur PC.
remember that i said any questions concerning IT (we had quite a lot of Q&A for simple to complex questions) - well even recommendation for new PCs;
but i disagree with the fact u buy a better machine to have a faster one;
well my CPU can go up to 3.66 GHZ instead of 2.66; if u compare apple to apple and buy the same line of CPU but the one that will have a 3.66 official clock speed will be 1.6 or 1.8 times the price of a 2.66 - so some of the boys might want a faster comp. with less money.
and tx for responding cuz honestly i knew that most of the gus have no clue about wotsoever and this post would have spider webs all over.
but then again every1 wants to upgrade or buy a new pc and this post can also help them do that
Cheers,

Now that's what i call a good PC Smile

Ah, honestly sometimes i wish that i knew nothing about pc's or some other things tbh, life would be a lot easier on some occasions Smile
But somehow it seems that the more you know about something the more things you find about it that it could go wrong or that you wanna improve or bla bla bla...

And personally i haven't "updated" my hardware for quite a while now ... but i find what i have atm sufficient Smile if my memory serves me well its

ASUS K8N deluxe motherboard
Athlon 64 3000+ cpu
ATI RadeOn X800 Pro GPU
2x512 DDR Supertalent 400 mhz ram
1x 40 gb hdd maxtor
1x 280 gb seagate hdd
and... uhm

Audigy 2 soundblaster audio card ... Smile

that's about it ...

well, enjoy folks Smile

blood r u using x64 or x86 windows? don't use vista cuz ur RAM r only 1GB - ur CPU is 64 bit enabled and if you want (since u have 2 HDD) i can send u or upload it on my FTP for u to download the xp 64 bit PERFORMANCE mode that i have - it is very light and u will feel the difference between using a 32 bit OS and a 64 bit OS

that would be interesting! dual monitor is definitely not used for gaming - does he have SLI (Nvidia) or Crossfire (ATI) mode? or just 1 VGA with 2 outs? is it digital or analog connection? (does he use an adapter to connect to monitors)
man this is becoming I N T E R E S T I N G

What is Overclocking?
Overclocking is the process of making various components of your computer run at faster speeds than they do when you first buy them. For instance, if you buy a Pentium 4 3.2GHz processor, and you want it to run faster, you could overclock the processor to make it run at 3.6GHz.

Short version: If your computer is a Dell, eMachine, Gateway, etc... you can NOT overclock.

Re: ALL IT questions (from turning ur pc on to OCing ur pc)

Post by TheKicKer on Tue Apr 29, 2008 3:44 pm

Reasons to not Overclock
----
1) Protection - Warranties are voided on almost all CPUs, and some motherboards as well.
2) Stress - More Stress on the CPU (and on all devices if you increase the FSB)
3) Heat - More Heat Generation from CPU (and RAM if you increase the FSB)
4) Sensitivity - The heat sensitivity of your system will be greatly effected. If you o/c in the winter and summer comes around, you might be forced to reduce your speeds because your system cannot work stably with the large change in ambient temperature.
5) Efficiency - Increasing your CPU speed with overclocking doesn't increase it's efficiency at processing data. For example, an AMD TBird 1.0 overclocked to 1.4 will NOT be as good as an AMD XP 1.4, simply because the XP has many more optimizations, such as a full SSE instruction set to name one.
6) Hassle? - Some people get fed up with having to constantly adjust their system for stabilty. Other, however, find this the most intriguing and education part of overclocking, so it's your call.

Reasons to Overclock
----
1) Speed - Your CPU will perform more operations per second (and your RAM if you increase the FSB)
2) Ca$h - Who needs a to buy a "pricey" 1900+ when you can get a 1600+ for half the price and overclock it to the same speed?!
3) Troubleshooting - an Overclocker HAS to know what is going on in their system, because if he doesn't, he'll have an unstable system. Being able to overclock successfully will educate a person on vast areas. Everything from CPU temperatures, to BIOS updates, to OS drivers, to motherboard jumpers. This knowledge is invaluable.
4) Bragging Rights - Everyone knows that the first thing they're gonna do once they have a nice big overclock is plump it into their Guru3D signature and post a big ol' happy thread about it
